Fall 2023 Auditions
When are they?
Fall 2023 auditions will be held on Tuesday, September 12th, and Thursday, September 14th. You only need to come to one of these days; please don’t come to both! They will start at 7pm each day. If you need to come late, you can! Just know that you may not audition until later into the night depending on how many people show up.
Where are they?
They will be held at the Kirwan Hall. Before auditions start, meet in the Rotunda in Kirwan Hall (as soon as you walk in through the main doors) for a few performances from each group! Once we finish those, each group will hold separate auditions in their own room. Our room is TBD, but during auditions, we will have flyers with arrows on the walls guiding you to our room. If you get lost, don’t worry as we’ll also post how to get there on our instagram story.
What do I prepare?
SINGERS! Please prepare a verse and a chorus (about 30s - 1m max) of a non-musical theatre song that shows off your voice! Keep in mind that we primarily sing pop and r&b music, so be sure to think about that when choosing your song. We want to be able to picture you in the group and see how you can fit!
BEATBOXERS! Please prepare a 1 minute freestyle & show us what you can do!
Don’t overthink it, you got this :)

FAQ
How do I sign up?
There is no sign up! Just come to one of the audition days and write your name on the audition list at the door. The order of auditions is on a first come first serve basis, so you may want to come early! *(Please note that this does not apply to virtual audition submissions. As long as you upload your video to the Google Form by the specified date & time, you are good to go!)*
How often are auditions?
Faux Paz typically holds auditions at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. Once audition dates are finalized, they are posted on this page as well as Facebook and Instagram.
What should I sing?
We suggest singing a verse and a chorus of a song that you are comfortable with and that shows off your voice! Remember that if it's a song none of us know, we may not be able to tell what is intentional or not. However, popular songs that we are more likely to know also make differences from the original song more noticeable. Try to avoid choosing musical theatre or classical songs since they are not usually a part of our repertoire and we want to be able to imagine you in the group.
I'm a beatboxer/vocal percussionist. Do I have to sing?
Yes, we would still like to hear you sing a verse and chorus for us. But don't stress! If you primarily beatbox, we will take that into consideration!
Do I have to be a student to audition?
Yes, in order to be considered for Faux Paz you must be enrolled as a student at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Can I audition for more than one group?
Yes, the majority of groups hold auditions on the same day(s). However, you can only join one group after auditions and callbacks.
Is one audition day better than the other?
No! We hold two audition days in order to accommodate students' schedules and to shorten the wait time on each day. Again, you only need to come to one audition day and both days provide equal chances.
When are rehearsals?
We typically rehearse Wednesdays and Sundays from 7-9:30pm; however these days and times are subject to change based on the current members' schedules. We also add additional rehearsal times before bigger performances, such as our semesterly Big Shows or when we compete in the ICCA.
Do I need to be able to read music?
No! However it is definitely helpful to know and our members have helped teach it to new members!
What should I wear to auditions?
We suggest dressing comfortably as auditions and callbacks can involve some wait time. Dressy attire is not necessary.
What should I bring to auditions?
Definitely WATER and a pen! We suggest bringing some type of reusable bottle as there are multiple water fountains in the building. You may also want to bring some snacks, homework to do while you wait, a phone charger, and headphones to help you practice your song.
I'm new to music. Should I still audition?
Absolutely! Many of our members were new to music when they joined and the majority are not music majors. We encourage anyone to audition who loves to sing or beatbox, no matter how experienced.
If I don't get in, can I audition again in the future?
Yes, in fact many current members were not accepted into the group the first time they auditioned. Faux Paz is a very competitive group and many factors go into our decisions. We may need different voice parts or styles at different times. Remember to keep practicing and to not get discouraged!
What if I am not able to attend either audition day?
If neither day works for you, please send in a virtual audition on the google form at the top of this page (before the specified day of callbacks please!) Also, please shoot us an email at fauxpazumd@gmail.com just to let us know you sent in a virtual audition. *(Please note that because you have the choice to submit virtually anyway (Spring 2022), you do not need to send us an email. Thank you!)*
What if I have more questions?
Feel free to contact us here or email us directly at fauxpazumd@gmail.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible!
